I wake and almost have to rub my eyes to remind myself that I am in fact awake and this is real. My grand four poster bed looks across the vibrant green waterways of the Okavango Delta. Countless birds circle, duck and dive over its clear lagoons, grasses and ferns: it is here that families of hippos wallow amongst the water lilies and gently swaying reeds. Nine spacious suites capitalise on this stunning scenery; framed from my private pool, view deck and luxuriant sala, as well as from the camp's beautiful open-sided dining room and thatched boma.
Set in a 25 000 ha private concession, Xaranna's setting is remarkably remote. Serene in the extreme, I instantly find my rhythm with Mother Nature on foot, by mokoro (traditional boat) and 4x4. I taste all aspects of this dramatically varied environment: its floodplains, grasslands, woodlands, bush and savannah. And oh, how good it tastes!
