Overlooking the blistering blue Bay of Maputo, this grand old lady sits at the heart of the city, majestically so. Her colonial elegance on proud display both inside and out. The Polana Hotel dates back to 1922 and as such, is steeped in history. But my sea-facing suite and the hotel facilities are very much 21st century, particularly with its recent refurbishment.
There's plenty to keep me fit and healthy during my stay, with tennis courts, bowling, gymnasium and glorious outdoor swimming pool... Exercise I think I'll need after overindulging on the fantastic seafood on offer (the peri-peri prawns being out of this world!). Just a hop, skip and a jump away are the bars and clubs of Maputo, but I opt for a trip further south to the Maputo Elephant Reserve, a lush 236 000 ha stretch of swampland that's home to around 200 elephants.
